More World Records Set on Day 7 of Tokyo 2020

INTERNATIONAL: It is day seven of the Tokyo Olympics and more world records are being broken in the pool and with the barbells. China’s Shi Zhiyong broke his own world record to win the men's 73kg weightlifting event on Wednesday, claiming a gold medal for the second Games in a row. The 27-year-old lifted a combined 364 kg to better his own world record of 363.

The Chinese team has collected 13 Gold medals so far, winning the Women’s 200m butterfly yesterday. In the other main events of the day, the US won the 800m men’s freestyle in swimming and Australia took first place in the Men’s 200m breaststroke. The medal table now sees the US on top with 13 golds and 35 medals in total, shortly followed by Japan and China.

In Tokyo the atmosphere is literally blazing, with temperature up and above 33°C. The intense heat and humidity could force more competition schedule changes with the International Tennis Federation, in charge of the competition at the Games, already moving Thursday's matches scheduled for 11am local time to 3pm. On the Covid front, Olympics organisers have reported 24 new Games-related Covid-19 cases, bringing the total Games-linked number to 193.
